On Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7:00 PM, Barbara Demick will discuss her new book, "Eat the Buddha: Life and Death in a Tibetan Town.” The first Books & Coffee event of the season is another in a long series of collaborations with Friends of the Bronxville Public Library, although given today’s new normal, the event will not be held in Sommer Center, but rather via Zoom. Registration is required to receive the Zoom information.
A National Book Award finalist for “Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea,” Demick’s latest book was recently featured on the cover of the New York Times Book Review (July 28) and in a New York Times list of “Ten New Books We Recommend This Week” (July 23), which described it as “the profile of a group of Tibetans with roots in Ngaba County, in the Chinese province of Sichuan, which bears the gory distinction of being the “undisputed world capital of self-immolations.” Parul Sehgal calls the book “masterly,” and says that it “covers an awe-inspiring breadth of history,” from the heyday of the Tibetan empire to the present day.” Bronxville’s Zahabia Brainch will moderate the discussion.
