Concordia College New York was honored to welcome Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul to campus on Tuesday, January 14, when she delivered Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2020 State of the State address: Making Progress Happen. The event held special meaning for Concordia as the College has taken Civics and Civility as its theme for the academic year.
Faculty, staff and students were joined, in the words of Lt. Gov. Hochul, by “a room of influencers” including Deputy Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins, Commissioner of Westchester Veterans Agency Ron Tocci, County Legislator Ruth Walter, Mayor of Mount Vernon Shawyn Patterson-Howard, President of the Mount Vernon City Council Lisa Copeland, Bishops Angelo and Nancy Rosario of the Bronx Clergy Task Force, Rev. Troy P. DeCohen, President of United Black Clergy of Westchester, and several other leaders from Westchester and the Bronx.
Before her address, Lt. Gov. Hochul commended Concordia and event organizer Viviana DeCohen, Director of Veteran and Military Affairs at Concordia College New York, for “all you do in filling a powerful human need for our veteran community.”
The Lieutenant Governor was introduced by Dr. Kathryn Galchutt, a professor of history at Concordia College, who extolled the benefits of active and engaged citizenship and pointed out the hope inherent in E.B. White’s description of democracy as “the recurring suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half of the time.”
