Concordia College Adds BS in New Media Communications & Digital Production

Concordia College will begin offering a BS in New Media Communications & Digital Production in 2021. The new major will expand on the robust and popular concentration in New Media the College has offered since 2006.

The program’s approach is hands-on, with theory embedded in practice. From their first year, students work with industry-standard software and state-of-the art equipment in a blue screen studio outfitted with HD cameras. The New Media labs occupy the top floor of Scheele Memorial Library, adjacent to the OSilas Art Gallery.

With a guiding focus on new uses of technology integrated in production and marketing, tracks within the major include Digital Production and Photography, Graphic Design, and Marketing. All students graduate fluent in multiple platforms, with a portfolio of professional-level work.

Professor Kit Fitzgerald, a veteran of Public Television and Bloomberg Media, and an award-winning media artist, is the founding director of the program. Her close industry ties and those of the faculty she has brought to the program secure students prestigious internships with HBO, Comedy Central, MTV, Showtime and WABC-TV. Regular field trips to networks, museums and other industry work places give students exposure to the wide variety of fields available to them upon graduation. Industry professionals often visit campus for lectures and workshops as well.

A highlight of the academic year is the Concordia Oscars, where awards are presented and students share their work with the community. New Media student work is exhibited annually in the OSilas Gallery Year-End Student Show, and has won prizes from international film festivals. In the fall of 2020 a Sluberski Film Series event was dedicated to Quarantine Diaries, a remarkable compilation film created by over 30 New Media students. The contemporary history of the spring 2020 quarantine is told through the lived experience of Concordia’s notably diverse students, sent back to homes spanning the globe when campus closed in March.

Concordia’s New Media alumni have gone on to careers in virtual reality, editing, production, independent filmmaking, social media strategy and more.
